CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lily's heart was heavy as she steered the boat up to the shores of Luta Island, dreading what she was about to find. This had been the area they had heard the sirens from—the area where they'd seen the storm brewing, far off from the main islands.

It was a small, relatively unknown island with few inhabitants. Apparently, the storm had just clipped the island as it had passed through—and in its aftermath, a local on the island found the body of a girl.

A girl on the beach with her throat slit.

Lily saw coast guard boats docked at the shore, along with police officers from the mainland, gathered around a spot on the beach. She turned back to Xander as the wind whipped through his dark blond hair, and he wore the same solemn expression as her.

Her worst fear had come true—another body had been found while they had been busy with a dead-end lead.

Lily and Xander jumped off the boat and made their way towards the scene.

They rushed towards the group of officers, the sand crunching beneath their boots. As they approached the crowd, Lily could see the body on the sand, a young woman with long, dark hair spread out around her. Blood had pooled around her neck and seeped into the sand, an eerie contrast to the now blue sky above them. The storm had fully passed and left this girl in its wake.

Just like the other two.

Lily felt a lump form in her throat as she looked at the girl's lifeless body.

"Who is she?" Lily asked one of the officers.

"We don't know yet," the officer said. "We're waiting for the coroner to arrive."

Lily nodded, her eyes scanning the beach for any clues. But the scene was eerily clean—no footprints, no signs of struggle. The storm would have washed anything away.

If Lily hadn't been sure of it before, she was now; the killer was killing women during storms and letting the storm wash away the evidence.

Lily couldn't comprehend why the killer was doing this, but she knew that they had to work fast before another storm hit. They needed to catch the killer before they claimed another innocent life.

She looked back at the victim, at her near-peaceful face. Lily fished a glove out of her pocket—this was the first fresh crime scene she'd been able to get at during this case, and she needed to do her due-diligence.

She crouched beside the body and started to examine it, her eyes scanning for any clues. She searched for anything that could help identify the woman, when her fingers brushed against a hard object in the sand.

Lily pulled out the object. It was a wallet, with no identifying marks on it. She opened it up to find a driver's license with a name: Damaris McAllister.

Lily stood upright and turned to one of the officers, who watched her carefully.

"Damaris McAllister," Lily said. "Do you know her?"

The officer shook his head.

Lily dropped the wallet in an evidence bag and handed it to him, then went back over to Xander, taking off her gloves.
